Review: Cyrus (2010)

Cyrus (2010) is a comedy drama film starring John C. Reilly (Step Brothers), Jonah Hill (Superbad), Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) and Catherine Keener (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass.

The film is based around John (John C. Reilly) who is having trouble getting used to his new life despite being divorced for seven years from Jamie (Catherine Keener). But at a party he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei) who seems to like Johns unique charm. Could this be his break to getting his life on track? There’s just one little hitch; Molly’s grown up sun, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). John has to overcome the problems of a new relationship and Molly’s weird son.

The film wasn’t as i expected, mainly due to the marketing and trailers which i feel portrayed it more of a straight comedy. Likely to target audiences of the Judd Apatow club. The film was rather funny but also serious and with romance. It’s like a mainstream Indie style Romantic Comedy like Away We Go (2009).

I do recommend the film but warn people not to find it as “Laugh Out Loud” funny as the trailers show. I’d give the film 3/5.
