Review: Griff The Invisible (2011)
Griff, office worker by day, superhero by night, has his world turned upside down when he meets Melody, a beautiful young scientist who shares his passion for the impossible.
Griff The Invisible is an Australian romantic comedy drama with elements of fantasy. It stars Ryan Kwanten, who is best known as ‘Jason Stackhouse’ from HBO’s True Blood. The other main cast member is Maeve Dermody. The film is directed and written by Leon Ford.
The film is dubbed as Kick-Ass meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – now when I read that it had me hooked and extremely curious on how this could pan out. To my delight the film is really good.
Ryan Kwanten plays Griff. He’s an office worker who is very shy, secretive, different and for this, gets bullied in the office by one character. But at night he is a superhero trying to clean up his town from criminals with often no thanks from the people he saves. Kwanten is great in it, he plays this sensitive character well and believable. My biggest surprise was finding out he was Australian in the first place!
Maeve Dermody plays Melody. She’s the love interest in the film who invades Griff’s unique world, but we find out she isn’t as she seems as well. Melody believes you can pass or phase through walls as she scientifically explains to her Father. She, like Griff is a shy unique person. Not until we reach near the end of the film we see there unique quirkiness that connects them within there own little world.
Leon Ford has done a great film here. It’s shot well and the story is great. It’s less Kick-Ass though as some publications are calling it. It’s more of a fantasy love story but packed full of imagination. The film is nearly perfect with right amount of realism and fantasy, and with a story that simply delightful, funny, warming and touching.
I very much doubt Griff The Invisible will make it over seas for commercial release, but lets hope it comes out on DVD instead because it’s simply too wonderful not to be seen by the rest of the world. I highly recommend this as a watch.

Finally saw the film and it was pretty good. I loved the fantasy part of it and I think although the gist of the story is same but on most levels it’s different from Kick Ass and more like Eternal.
Sweet. It’s got the Kick-Ass elements but in the end its more about the love story and how they both embrace each other’s unique take on the world around them.
