LOVEFiLM Review: Adaptation (2002)

Frequently cynical screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has just taken on a new assignment. That is, to adapt writer Susan Orlean’s “The Orchid Thief” into a screenplay, all of it based on the life of the eccentric John Laroche, an exotic plant collector based out of Florida. While his easygoing twin brother Donald, is writing scripts with ease, Charlie finds himself on a perpetual struggle that never seems to end.

The Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonze combination is yet again another winning formula in ‘Adaptation’ which stars Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper.

The film is just flat out brilliant and Nicolas Cage, in both roles, is absolutely astonishing. If Cage did more roles like this then I’m sure he would be one of my favourite actors.

I found the film very engaging and did not bore me at all. I enjoyed the twists and turns, as well as the different time/year settings we found the characters at different points. Obviously a lot of the films success is the magic of Kaufman/Jonze.

I highly recommend this film as a must see.
