Review: 50/50 (2011)

“That doesn’t make any sense though. I mean… I don’t smoke, I don’t drink… I recycle…”

50/50 is a comedy drama film that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet), Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) and Anjelica Huston (The Darjeeling Limited). The film is directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness).

Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis in this new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Will Reiser. 50/50 is the story of a guy’s transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health – drawing its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminding us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

50/50 is a film that is being dubbed as a ‘cancer-comedy’. Yes the theme is cancer, yes its a comedy but its also serious and dramatic. It will literally play with your emotions just for fun as you experience this wonderful films story.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has really been a solid actor since 500 Days of Summer. A film that made the world aware he’s still here and is a cracking actor. I think 50/50 is possibly his best performance to date as he juggles comedy and drama. You really get caught up in him and feel nearly every emotion he goes through. It feels like your on the same journey of watching a close friend/family member battle through this disease and you really feel it. To put it simply Levitt was flawless.

Seth Rogen is like marmite it seems. You either love or hate him. I admit I’m getting a bit bored of his persona, simply because he has no range as an actor just yet. But I can forgive him in 50/50 because he is essentially playing himself, which is what is true about the story. Also he is damn funny in this whilst also being incredibly sympathetic. Just like Levitt this is one of Regen’s best films.

Main support cast consisted of Anna Kendrick and Anjelica Huston. Both equally fantastic. Huston is quite a scene stealer as Adams distressed Mother who struggles to cope with her sons sudden news of cancer. Kendrick plays the psychologist who is meant to help and guide Adam through the difficult journey – but she’s pre-med so they end up learning together. I like Kendrick and can see a future award winning performance in the future for her. She’s a solid actress.

Have to say that I really loved 50/50, well a little bit more than that honestly. It’s a film that will make you laugh and then sucker punch you in the chest with brutal realities, then in the same action pick you back up and give you a warm hug whilst telling a dirty joke in your ear. It was very heartfelt. 50/50 is one of the must see films of year.
