Review: Star Wars blu-ray – The Complete Saga // Special features part 2: Documentaries

I’m going to continue with my Star Wars blu-ray review on the special features with this Part 2 post.

I’m gonna give a brief outline on all the documentaries under there titles.

THE MAKING OF STAR WARS

This is basically like a kids version of ‘the making of’ because its narrated by C-3PO and R2-D2. There explaining about the story, effects and how they all did them but in young age way. Kinda reminded me of those old cheesy videos you used to watch in School.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: SPFX

Essentially the same as the first but far more interesting and informative. Mark Hamill is the narrator which basically concentrates on the special effects of The Empire Strikes Back. Like I said its rather interesting as we see how a lot of the scenes and set-ups were done, we get an insight into the world of stop motion capture and models/miniatures being blown up left, right and centre and also the use of blue screen.

CLASSIC CREATURES: RETURN OF THE JEDI

Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams narrate this chapter as we delve into creatures of Return of the Jedi. More specificaly how the puppets and the rest of the weird and wonderful creatures of the series. We see in depth how the mechanics of all the puppets and complexities of it all.

ANATOMY OF A DEWBACK

The first interviews and mini documentary of George Lucas, the film tinker. We see the beginning of how George wants to revisit certain scenes in Star Wars and replace the puppet characters with CGI creatures to add more mobility and life.

STAR WARRIORS

This is wonderful. We get to look into the world of the cosplay in which people dress up like Star Wars characters. More specifically the 501st Legion which is a world wide volunteer program. It has members in its thousands internationally. This chapter goes through the people that got chosen to participate in the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade where a battalion of 501st were selected all over the world to march in it. I really interesting chapter. www.501st.com

STAR WARS TECH

45 minute look into the tech of Star Wars like X-Wings, TIE Fighters, Lightspeed, Death Star, windows and Darth Vader. We see if it any of this technically possible in todays times. Also exploring the use of prosthetic and bionic limbs. We see if Lightsabres could technically be made as well through the use of plasma. We have a little look into the theory of carbonite.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE MASTERS (ESB 30 YEARS LATER)

Interviews with George Lucas and the late great Irvin Kershner about The Empire Strikes Back. We also hear from John Williams about some of the music themes involved.

Star Wars blu-ray is out now.
