Review: The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

The Cabin in the Woods is horror/thriller film that’s been gaining a lot of buzz among the interwebs and twitterverse. Usually such buzz I would ignore because I actually don’t like horror films, unless they have a comedic streak running through them. I just usually find the genre to be boring if honest. However The Cabin in the Woods proved to be an exception, specially as it was the FIRST horror film I have seen in the cinema. Ever.
Now this review will be spoiler free, which is normal for me anyway as I like potential viewers to experience the story themselves at the time. Personally the only thing I had seen for this film was just the trailer followed by gleaming word of mouth tidbits.
In my view this isn’t a film about acting, I don’t believe many horror films from the last 10 years are. One of the only exceptions I can think is perhaps Jack Nicholson in The Shining from 1970. But on the whole the cast and characters were sufficient and, most importantly, they didn’t feel unlikable. Chris Hemsworth, who is arguably the biggest name attached to this suits his jock persona very comfortably. In fact the whole cast was great in their own stereotypical teen roles.
Now, like I said this was going to be a spoiler free review. So you’ll have to bare with me as I try to tip-toe round some aspects. The film is excellent. It really is, and it’s not a cruddy ‘torture porn’ film like the terrible SAW franchise. In fact the film I can best describe it to would be Scream. In the sense that it’s a thriller, with some blood and a film that has humour. Another film that it reminded me of was the cult film Cube. It also doesn’t take itself that seriously, but in a good way.
The Cabin in the Woods is a fantastic horror/thriller that will leave you wanting more. The premise is original and it re-writes the genre into something relevant and exciting. The film was bloody, suspenseful, jumpy and humorous. And coming from a guy who doesn’t like the genre this is a major compliment. I’d happily see this again. Go see The Cabin in the Woods, you won’t regret it!

Agreed. I’m not a massive horror guy, this is the 3rd horror I’ve seen in cinemas. Each character had a real likeable aspect to then, it’s funny, tense and maybe even a little though provoking.
I’m so glad I avoided the trailers, I had no idea where the film was going to take me.
