LOVEFiLM Review: Melancholia (2011)

Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth… Melancholia is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.

Lars von Trier’s Melancholia is a film by name and nature. A film I incredibly disliked on a high level. It wasn’t quite on the hate scale though. I found it tediously boring with unlikable characters, dreadfully slow and with a plot/script that was muddled. I know Dunst’s character was suffering from melancholia herself but I felt like giving her a good shake for being so annoying and seemingly ungrateful.

And don’t get me started on what the Skarsgård family were doing. Where did Alexander Skarsgård disappear to half way through? This just made the first half and the wedding utterly redundant to the film. Also, Charlotte Gainsbourg wide-eyed lobotomised expressions throughout really grated me. The only thing Melancholia has going for it is that its visually impressive. But if I wanted a visually impressive film with little plot/script I’d watch Sucker Punch.
